[Sep. 4th, 2008|09:13 pm] |
Yay for having Labor Day off from work! My brother and sister-in-law nearly froze to death camping out last weekend in the rain/snow forecast for that region. They should have canceled like I told them to when I mentioned that they would get snowed on.
I got employee of the month at work. I got a company coffee mug and a small tin of company customized M&M's. Yeah, it's piddly, but the company is in a tight bind at the moment trying to acquire some new clients after the biggest one decided to discontinue their contract this year. I figured I'm lucky to still be working there when I was the last one hired in that department.
My other sister-in-law had her baby yesterday and is all excited to not be pregnant anymore, lol. They named him Jared and he weighed 7lb 15oz. So hubby and I brought over the pile of baby presents that we've been making and saving up for a year. A crocheted afghan, two baby burpies that we made and edged, and a cloverleaf blanket that I edged, plus a cute pair of baby socks. :)
Then my laptop decided to break something. The back light to the screen went out, so I'm working off of a second monitor at the moment until it can be fixed while I'm on vacation next week.
We're also trying to get bids on installing heat and air into my parents house since the radiant heat is going out. They have to install everything, the duct work, the vents, the furnace and AC unit, take out the swamp cooler and take out the old boiler. Not very cost effective, but really needed since the heat won't last much longer with winter coming on.
I don't think I need anything else to happen this week. I just want to go on vacation, really soon. |

I hate being so damned cynical. I hate it when I have a lack of interesting things to say. I have a lot of things I could say, but nothing worth reading. I'm in kind of a pissy mood anyway. Maybe if I wouldn't watch the Republican National Convention coverage I'd be in a better mood. I'm a little worried about that. I've not been this into politics since I was in college. My political enthusiasm tends to come and go, but I dunno, this election kind of lit a fire under my ass.
I watched Sarah Palin speak last night. She's scary. She talked about her family (very noticably focusing on her sons rather than her daughters). She gave herself a huge pat on the back for being a special needs mom. She sucked McCain's ass with hurricane force. She bashed on Obama, and talked about how down to earth she is and gave a bunch of down homespun wisdom about...nothing really. And then she made mention that she believes that our actions in Iraq are the will of God. *headesk* x infinity
Ok, ok, I'mma shut up about that for now. It's Thursday, so I should be thankful for things, right? Let's see...

re: GQ's article on leather jackets, to be found here:
http://men.style.com/gq/features/landing?id=content_7212
While I generally agree with the points outlined, I also find it insanely hard to take any advice given by a magazine that seems to think that elastic fabric at the waist of a biker jacket is a good thing*. It does not make me think, "Oh, how sexy." It instead makes me wonder what sort of sissy wimp needs the soft, cushy support of fabric on a LEATHER JACKET.
And another, though less pressing nitpick: Brown bomber jackets CAN look good. You just have to get one that's actually cut correctly and possibly made before 1980. (._.)/
*Note -- elasticized leather is okay. |

For those of you who have GC bookmarked, please update your bookmarks to http://www.goodbyechains.com. We aren't using Girl-Wonder as a host anymore, so any links to the old site will get you the dead version. | Question Tiem |
[Sep. 2nd, 2008|08:39 pm] |
I got into a horn-scuffle with a truck today. My mom and I had gone to Costco to get some things and parking was a bitch. ANYWAY. I'm not quite sure if I was an ass or not. I'm just curious, mind, as I'm not quite sure how to act in these situations sometimes, and it would be nice to be able to be in one and say, "Yeah, I should/shouldn't do this."
So... here's the story:
The lot was full. Really full. My mom doesn't like walking terribly far and I'd sprained... something... in my left leg, so if I could get a close spot, all the better. I was willing to wait a few minutes for one to open up.
I pulled into a lane behind an idling black F-150ish truck and gave him about a car-length space, in case he had to move. One of the cars to the immediate right of him (on-par with his truck's bed) lit up its back-up lights. It wanted to leave. Oh goody! I think, I can have this spot. And since the truck was, essentially, already past it, I'd figured he'd lost his chance.
Not so much. He begins to back up. Alright, he wants the spot. I'm cool with this, for the most part. I half expected this, anyway, since he'd been waiting there for a while before I'd pulled in and was likely getting to the "any spot is my spot" stage.
He backs up. I lose eye contact with his rearview mirror. He's still coming. I give a woogah to let him know I'm there. He stops for a second, seemingly confused-- there's a white van behind me, maybe he thought it was doing the honking? --and then continues to back up. I lose sight of his sideview mirror. Now I know he can't see me at all. I honk again, louder and longer this time, and put Voodoo in reverse. The white van is already backing up to give me room. I thank him over my shoulder and put my tail within five feet of his nose. I can see the truck's rearview again, but it soon dissapears. He's still backing. I honk once more and back even closer to the van. The van can't back up any more or its tail will be in the street. The truck keeps backing, so I put my hand down on the horn and keep it there. He stops, and I can see Voodoo's little chrome nose ornament in his bumper.
My mom is yelling at me for honking. I'm pissed off and scared. I remember being in my mom's Rabbit when an SUV backed OVER its nose and kept going, stopping only an inch or two before the windshield. I want to pull away and drive home, but the damned truck is too close to manouver out.
Finally, the truck's backup lights go out and he pulls foreward, PAST the parking spot, and spends the next five minutes rocking back and forth so he can back his truck into the space.
Guy in the truck being inconsiderate aside, should I have honked like an ass, or should I have gotten out of the car and politely asked him to watch for me? Should I have just pulled out of 'line' at the first sign of douchbaggery and avoided the whole thing altogether?
I'm confused. :( |

Hey, I found a handy visual guide to the women of Stargate (both shows). It' sup-to-date into 2006, so, frex, Larrin's not in it. (Oh how I despise Larrin.) This is useful for reminding me how people look, although I could wish there'd been a pic of Cadman with her hat off.
Also, there's another Nascar SGA fic out there, but it's posted on an f-locked journal. :( It's called "Stick Shift", and I know about it because I found an adorable fanart... |

| SGA genderswap thoughts again: Lorne's name |

Okay, so I have this AU where Lorne's a woman and Cadman's a man. Cadman's name is easy enough to parse: Laura = Laurence. Larry. (Ronon is a woman, but since, according the character in the show, Ronon works as a name for a boy or a girl, I'm not changing it. *laziness vindicated!*)
I am waffling about Lorne's first name. Canonical male Lorne is named Evan. Now, there's a variety of female names I can get by extrapolating off that (I've even seen some people claim Evan is a perfectly fine name for a girl.) I've been defaulting to Evangelica (sometimes Evangeline) with Eva as a pet form. The thing is, Evan has been in the top 100 names for boys in the US for a few decades and has been in the top 600 since 1900, whereas neither of those girls' names are nearly so common as that. Hence the waffling. Evelyn has been even more common than Evan, and Eva has stayed in the top 400. I've also seen Evania listed as a feminized form of Evan.
And thus, a poll: Poll #1252624 Lorne
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: AllWhat should Maj. Lorne be named as a woman?
Addendum the first! madripoor_rose has suggested Yvonne. If you would like to vote for that, post agreement under her comment, I guess. (If there's a way to edit a poll after it's posted, I haven't found it yet.)
Addendum the second! If there's a particular reason why you pick a name, feel free to tell me what it is. :3 |
